In the secret, in the quiet place
In the stillness, You are there
In the secret, in the quiet hour
I wait only for You
‘Cause I want to know You more

The Secret Place
There are times when noise, chaos, and distractions in life may cause us to miss hearing God when He speaks to us, but even if we miss His voice at first, He keeps on calling to us, eager to speak into our lives and situations. He WANTS us to hear and understand what He has to say. He has direction and strategy and wisdom and encouragement to reveal in our lives.
It’s possible He’s tried to get our attention a few times already, but perhaps we haven’t slowed down or quieted our hearts long enough to hear Him or, we simply haven’t responded to or obeyed the last thing He said. Either way, it can be a frustrating place to feel as though you aren’t catching on. The truth is, we do have to make an effort to listen, to quiet ourselves, to tune in to the sound of His voice, to be alert and ready to pay attention and respond in obedience. We have to be intentional in listening AND obeying. This is what the secret place is about.
You may not be sure He wants to speak to you or if you even have the capability of hearing, but that’s a lie the enemy would love for us to believe in order to discount or discredit the voice of God in our lives. You may be hearing God already but you just didn’t realize it as being Him. Perhaps this very word is God speaking to you now.
Hearing God Speak
Stop, pause, listen… Create some margin and space to practice listening for Him. Begin by spending time in the Word, and writing down scriptures that stand out to you (which is one of the ways He speaks to us, through the Bible). In 1 Samuel 3:10, it says, “The Lord came and stood there, calling as at the other times…” If God would speak to Samuel, who was twelve years old, then we can surely hear His voice, too.
He has answers for us. He has confirmation and encouragement and direction. He speaks through His Word and gives revelation and understanding through the Holy Spirit, so we have available all we need to hear for ourselves. Just quiet your heart, and respond, “Speak, Lord, I’m ready to listen. What do you want me to do?”
